“Foghat” may not be a common household name in the rock enthusiast’s store. However, US based British hard rock blues band had an immense influence upon the coming generations of rock musicians. Formed in 1971 after the break-up of blues band “Savoy Brown”, it included the quartet – Dave Peverett (Vocals/guitars), Rod Price (Guitars), Tony Stevens (Bass) and Roger Earl (Drums). “Foghat” had a series of best-selling albums throughout the seventies, with numerous sell-out concerts across the US and several gold or platinum albums.

Originally penned by Willie Dixon in 1954 and recorded by Muddy Waters, “I just want to make love to you” was a cover version released by “Foghat” in their debut album in 1972. The debut album was produced by Dave Edmunds. This album introduced “Foghat” into the world of hard rock blues and actually established them from the very beginning. The album had few cover songs and mostly their staple hard rock blues numbers. A must have gem for any hard rock enthusiast; the album actually propelled the future of heavy metal sound for the coming years.

“I just want to make love to you” was originally penned “Just make love to me” and released thus in 1954 by Muddy Waters. However, the song had been covered by numerous artists from “The Rolling Stones” to “Etta James”, from “Bo Didley” to “Adele”, from “Buddy Guy” to “Mungo Jerry”, from “SAHB” to “The Grateful Dead” and from “The Righteous Brothers” to “Van Morrison”. Actually, there are so many cover versions that it is very surprising fact to the most rock enthusiasts that it was Willie Dixon’s child. Undoubtedly, Foghat’s version is the one which is perhaps most well known. It peaked to position 83 on Billboard Hot 100 in 1972 and the live version reached the position 33 on Billboard Hot 100 in 1977.

The song begins with an amazing bass line by Tony and then, Rod’s guitar joins force. Then, the dual guitar plucking starts howling and with Roger’s drums, the song explodes into full force. With Dave’s vocals, the song reaches the ultimate zenith. The song is a traditional love song with the pretty straight forward meaning – I am not expecting any domestic lady out of you, I just need to make love to you. With homely and seductive lyrics, wonderful guitar leads, the song is truly a hard rock blues lover’s piece of cake. Slide twinning guitar dexterity shown by the guitarists in the middle part is another highlight of the song. They have tactfully utilized the skill of the dual guitar player’s skill in a master stroke. Even the fading end part guitar sound is mesmerizing. All in all, a combo meal for any hard rock blues enthusiast!

Undoubtedly, a prototype hard rock blues number, “Foghat” proved how even a cover song can propel any band’s popularity so high. Yes, frankly, I just want you guys to love this song!!!!

Happy listening!!

I just want to make love to you

I don’t want you chew my bread

I don’t want you make my bed

I don’t want your money too

I just want to make love to you

I don’t want you be no slave

I don’t want you work all day

I don’t want you to be sad or blue

I just want to make love to you

I can tell by the way that you baby talk

I can see by the way that you switch and walk

I can tell by the way that you treat your man

That I could love you baby it’s a cryin’ shame

I don’t want you wash my clothes

I don’t want you clean my home

I don’t want you to be true

I just want to make love to you

I don’t want you be no slave

I don’t want you work all day

I don’t want you to be true

I just want to make love to you

I don’t want you keep a home

I don’t want you work a gun

I don’t want you to be true

I just want to make love
