“Journey” is a prototype pop/rock band of the late seventies and eighties and represented the AOR culture of the decade. Considered as one of the best selling bands of all time and with numerous hit singles, their incredible journey into the rock world is worth praise to all.
Mostly successful between 1978 to 1987, they have had numerous gold, multi-platinum as well as diamond albums. Formed by former “Santana” members Neal Schon (Lead guitar) and Gregg Rolie (Keyboards/vocals) and former “Frumious Bandersnatch” members Ross Valory (Bass) and George Tickner (Guitar) along with Prairie Prince (Drums) of “The Tubes”, they formed “Journey” in 1973 in San Francisco.
The earlier albums were more of jazz rock based instrumentals. With various line up changes, they finally added on Steve Perry as the lead vocals and the band changed their musical direction with more pop/rock and AOR sound. Their fourth album, the first with Steve Perry, changed everything. The band became more and more successful with further albums. However, perhaps disillusioned with success, the band broke up in mid eighties. Reunion occurred after a decade in 1996 and they have been going on strong even today, albeit with various line up changes. “Captured” is the band’s first live album released from the recordings of the “Departure” tour concert in 1980.
The album was dedicated to AC/DC’s lead singer Bon Scott following his death in 1980, as they had supported AC/DC’s “If You Want Blood” tour and considered Scott as “a friend from the highway”. The album sold two million copies and reached no. 9 on Billboard 200 album charts in 1981. It had mostly live songs, except one studio recording “The party’s over (Hopelessly in love)”.
“The party’s over (Hopelessly in love)” is a simple rock ballad, with a catchy rhythm and beat. The song describing the tragedy of a boy who is in love with a girl but the girl is not answering his pleas. Relatively short and sweet, the song is atypical rock ballad, which does not follow the simple pattern of a rock song. It begins with Neal’s unique riff which is striking and melodious at the same time. This riff forms the backbone of the entire song. Soft drums and mild bass beautify the song along with soothing keyboards by Stevie “Keys” Roseman. Steve Perry’s vocals, as usual is at its best.
His sharp and melodious voice, high note singing and changing tempo all are perfectly suited to the song. The song does not have a long solo, but a short take on lead by Neal is very aptly placed. The song fades away slowly with the chorus repeatedly blended with the unique riff till the end. “Journey” has had an incredible journey into the rock world and inbetween, they have contributed numerous wonderful pop/rock numbers. “The party’s over (Hopelessly in love)” may not be the song for which they shall be remembered for, but definitely, it is a remarkable song which you wish never to get over and fall hopelessly in love with…… Happy listening!!!

The party’s over (Hopelessly in love)
You never call me up
\When I’m alone at night.
What can this poor boy do,
When he’s hopelessly in love with you?
So I will tell you now
This love is fallin’ down.
Just what more can I do,
When I’m hopelessly in love with you?
Hopelessly in love, Hopelessly in love
Hopelessly in love with you. So I will tell you this,
Our love is in a fix.
Just what more can I do,
When I’m hopelessly in love with you?
You never call me up
When I’m alone at night.
What can this poor boy do,
When he’s hopelessly in love with you?
Hopelessly in love
Hopelessly in love
Hopelessly in love with you Hopelessly in love
Hopelessly in love
I’m hopelessly in love with you Oh, bye-bye, baby
The party’s over, I have gone away.
The party’s over, I have gone away.
The party’s over, I have gone away.
The party’s over, I have gone away.
Ooo, the party’s over, I have gone away,
The party’s over, I have gone away.
