Although Janis Ian may be an unfamiliar name for the rock fans, her contribution to rock music is definitely worth mentioning. Janis Ian broke into American folk music scene during mid-sixties as a teenager. Most remarkably known as a Grammy Award winner for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance in 1976, she has left an amazing legacy in the musical field. She is a multi talented artist- besides being a poet, a singer as well as a musician; she is also famous as science fiction writer! Her autobiography, “Society’s child” is also equally successful. Although Ian has a low profile life, her contribution to the music world just cannot be ignored.

Famous as a British boogie rock band, Status Quo was formed originally by Francis Rossi and Alan Lancaster in 1962. After various line-up changes and with the addition of Rick Parfitt in 1967, they ultimately became Status Quo in 1969. They have had numerous hits and are famous for evergreen numbers like “In the army now”, “Rockin’ all over the world”, “Pictures of matchstick men”, “Whatever you want”, “Down down” etc to name a few. Actually, they hold the Guinness Book of World Records for maximum number of UK Hit Singles (61) than any other band in history. “Def Leppard” of course requires no introduction to a rock fan. Formed in 1977 in Sheffield, England, they were part of the new wave of British heavy metal movement. With their 2nd album “High ‘n’ Dry” in 1981, they broke into the rock scene, and with their 3rd album “Pyromania” in 1983, they established themselves as the rock music’s permanent act. With subsequent “Hysteria” in 1987, they stormed the charts worldwide and topped the UK and US charts. “Hysteria” has sold over 25 million copies worldwide and spawned seven hit singles. It has now gained the cult status among the list of “Greatest albums of all times”. Presently Def Leppard is considered one of the world’s best-selling music artists. They are one of five rock bands who had two original studio albums selling in excess of 10 million copies. And after more than 40 years, they are still going strong and tough!

“Boston” is a prototype classic rock band from Boston, Massachusetts, formed by sound wizard Tom Scholz in 1976. Tom Scholz was a graduate from MIT, Massachusetts, who was a guitar prodigy. He set up his own recording studio in his basement where he developed Boston’s signature guitar sound. The unique sound was a combination of multiple lead and blended harmonies of both electric and acoustic guitars. Along with the unique guitar sound, the underrated Brad Delp had signature vocals perfectly blended for Boston’s classic rock feel. With numerous hit singles during the seventies and eighties, they are the band with one of the best selling debut albums in US history, with 1976 album “Boston” selling over 17 million copies. They were also nominated for Grammy awards as “Best New Artist” in 1976.

Ireland has contributed to the development of rock music immensely. And no doubt, “Thin Lizzy” is the most prominent of them all. One of the truly underrated bands of the era, they were formed by vocalist and bass player Phil Lynott and drummer Brian Downey in 1969 in Dublin. Because of their wonderful talents, they have been a source of inspiration for many rock bands of the seventies and henceforth. Star studded with pioneer guitarists like Gary Moore, Brian Robertson, Scott Gorham, John Sykes during various lineup changes, they did shine themselves with typical twin guitar sounds with Brian and Scott most prominently. Initially unsuccessful with few of their albums, their single “Whiskey in the jar” took them to stardom and thereafter, there was no looking back.
