Edged in blue

Reviewers- Bikash Shrestha/Nirab Kayastha

Ireland has contributed a lot to the rock world. And amongst them all, Rory Gallagher is undoubtedly the finest guitarist Ireland has ever presented to the world. Sadly, his career was cut short by various illnesses and he succumbed after liver transplantation in 1995, at the age of 47 years. He has been an inspiration to many, including Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Paul Rodgers to name a few and it is rumored that during his heydays, when Jimi Hendrix was asked how he felt to be the world’s greatest guitarist, he is reported to have said- “I don’t know, go ask Rory Gallagher.” A multi talented instrumentalist, a guitar wizard and blues rock maestro, Rory’s albums had been sold over 30 million copies despite not producing any single.

I love the night

Reviewers- Bikash Shrestha/Nirab Kayastha

Blue Oyster Cult is an American hard rock band formed in 1967 in New York. Originally formed as Soft White Underbelly by Donald Roeser (Buck Dharma) (Lead guitars, vocals), Albert Bouchard (Drums), Allen Lanier (Keyboards), Les Braunstein (Vocals) and Andrew Winters (Bass), they subsequently transformed into Blue Oyster Cult after renaming themselves several times. They have had more than 24 million record sales worldwide and are going strong even today with various line-up changes. Their most famous numbers include “(Don’t fear) The reaper”, “Godzilla”, “Burnin’ for you” etc but their contribution to heavy metal is immense and irreplaceable. They have special contribution in the development of music video culture as their music video for “Burnin’ for you” in 1981 became very famous and received numerous plays. They were also pioneers of light shows during their live performances and are probably one of the first bands to use lasers in their live shows.

These eyes

Reviewers- Bikash Shrestha/Nirab Kayastha

The Guess Who is one of the rare classic rock bands to have emerged out of Canada and gained worldwide attention during the late sixties and early seventies. They have had several hit numbers like “Shakin’ all over,” “American woman,” “These eyes,” etc to name a few. Formed in Winnipeg, Canada in 1965 by singer/guitarist Chad Allan as “Allan and the Silvertones”, the band have a unique story how they became “The Guess Who.” After formation, they had changed the original name to “Chad Allan and the Reflections”, and then to “Chad Allan and the Expressions.” In 1965, they had a hit with cover version of “Johnny Kid & the Pirates” hit “Shakin’ all over.” This song was also covered by “The You Know Who Group” earlier and hence “Chad Allan and the Expressions”’ record label credited the song to “Guess Who” in an attempt to build the mystique around the single. The song hit the charts and when the record label disclosed them as “Chad Allan and the Expressions,” the disc jockeys continued to call them “Guess Who” subsequently forcing the band to adapt to the new name “The Guess Who.”

Reviewers- Bikash Shrestha/Nirab Kayastha

Stillwater is a band which existed during the seventies. The band got highlighted when they were portrayed in Cameron Crowe’s 2000 film “Almost Famous.” Interestingly, “Stillwater” band in the movie was completely fictitious and represented various bands of the era, especially “The Eagles”, “Led Zeppelin” etc and had no resemblance to the original band.

Unlike the fictitious band of the movie, the real Stillwater band was formed in 1973 in Georgia with triple guitar team of Make Causey (Guitar), Bobby Golden (Guitar, vocals) and  Rob Walker (Guitar), Jimmy Hall (Vocals), Allison Scarborough (Bass, vocals), Bob Spearman (Keyboards, vocals) and Sebie Lacey (Drums). They produced only two albums during the seventies (Stillwater-1977) and (I Reserve the Right-1979). They were about to hit big, but their record label Capricorn Records was going through bad times. They soon disbanded after they were left without a label. However they did have a reunion in the nineties and produced another album “Running Free”.

Love hurts

Reviewers- Bikash Shrestha/Nirab Kayastha

Nazareth are a prototype seventies hard rock band hailing from Scotland. They have been a source of inspiration for many of the rockers of yesterday and today. Formed by Dan McCafferty (Vocals), Manny Charlton (Guitars), Pete Agnew (Bass) and Darrell Sweet (Drums) in 1968 in Scotland, they moved to England in 1970 looking for their musical prospectus. They gained the rock enthusiast’s attention from their early albums and reached the pinnacle in mid seventies with their sixth album “Hair of The Dog”. Although they are most well known for this amazing power ballad “Love hurts” from this album, this song would perhaps be an exception to their main roots.  Despite various line-up changes, they are still thankfully touring the world.
