Ireland has contributed a lot to the rock world. And amongst them all, Rory Gallagher is undoubtedly the finest guitarist Ireland has ever presented to the world. Sadly, his career was cut short by various illnesses and he succumbed after liver transplantation in 1995, at the age of 47 years. He has been an inspiration to many, including Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Paul Rodgers to name a few and it is rumored that during his heydays, when Jimi Hendrix was asked how he felt to be the world’s greatest guitarist, he is reported to have said- “I don’t know, go ask Rory Gallagher.” A multi talented instrumentalist, a guitar wizard and blues rock maestro, Rory’s albums had been sold over 30 million copies despite not producing any single.

These eyes

The Guess Who is one of the rare classic rock bands to have emerged out of Canada and gained worldwide attention during the late sixties and early seventies. They have had several hit numbers like “Shakin’ all over,” “American woman,” “These eyes,” etc to name a few. Formed in Winnipeg, Canada in 1965 by singer/guitarist Chad Allan as “Allan and the Silvertones”, the band have a unique story how they became “The Guess Who.” After formation, they had changed the original name to “Chad Allan and the Reflections”, and then to “Chad Allan and the Expressions.” In 1965, they had a hit with cover version of “Johnny Kid & the Pirates” hit “Shakin’ all over.” This song was also covered by “The You Know Who Group” earlier and hence “Chad Allan and the Expressions”’ record label credited the song to “Guess Who” in an attempt to build the mystique around the single. The song hit the charts and when the record label disclosed them as “Chad Allan and the Expressions,” the disc jockeys continued to call them “Guess Who” subsequently forcing the band to adapt to the new name “The Guess Who.”

Love hurts

Nazareth are a prototype seventies hard rock band hailing from Scotland. They have been a source of inspiration for many of the rockers of yesterday and today. Formed by Dan McCafferty (Vocals), Manny Charlton (Guitars), Pete Agnew (Bass) and Darrell Sweet (Drums) in 1968 in Scotland, they moved to England in 1970 looking for their musical prospectus. They gained the rock enthusiast’s attention from their early albums and reached the pinnacle in mid seventies with their sixth album “Hair of The Dog”. Although they are most well known for this amazing power ballad “Love hurts” from this album, this song would perhaps be an exception to their main roots.  Despite various line-up changes, they are still thankfully touring the world.

Marquee moon

Television is considered the masters of Punk Rock. Formed in New York Post Punk scene in 1973 by Tom Verlaine (Vocals/guitars), Richard Lloyd (Guitars), Billy Ficca (Drums) and Richard Hell (Bass), Television is one band which has remained so influential to the entire generations of rock music with hardly 3 albums. In their early days till 1975, they were prototype punk rock band with combination of Verlaine and Hell’s guitars. Subsequently, due to the growing tensions between the two, Hell quit and Richard Lloyd gradually became more influential in song writing as well as guitars. With addition of Fred Smith on bass, the new quartet debuted in 1977 with “Marquee Moon”. Most critics consider this to be one of the most influential debut albums of all times. This album is constantly featured in the top list of best rock guitar albums since then, even till today.

KISS is a hard rock band whose fame in the seventies and early eighties remained unparalleled. They have numerous hot numbers to their credits and are well loved by rock fans all over the world. Formed by Paul Stanley (Rhythm guitars/vocals), Gene Simmons (Bass guitars/vocals), Ace Frehley (Lead guitars/vocals) and Pete Criss (Drums/vocals) in New York in 1973, they were an amazing band with incredible hit numbers, extraordinary face painting make ups and elaborate stage shows. In 1978, they were at the commercial peak of their career, with 4 platinum albums just under two years. During this era, they ventured out for something extra-ordinary. All the 4 members released 4 solo albums under the name KISS, with similar album covers, with no artists contributing any to the other. This was perhaps their method of easing the tensions among the members, to showcase their own creativity; or maybe it was a very attractive market ploy. Whatever, all the albums were successful and consolidated KISS’s success further.
