Don’t you let me down

KISS is a hard rock band whose fame in the seventies and early eighties remained unparalleled. They have numerous hot numbers to their credits and are well loved by rock fans all over the world. Formed by Paul Stanley (Rhythm guitars/vocals), Gene Simmons (Bass guitars/vocals), Ace Frehley (Lead guitars/vocals) and Peter Criss (Drums/vocals) in New York in 1973, they were an amazing band with incredible hit numbers, extraordinary face painting make ups and elaborate stage shows. In 1978, they were at the commercial peak of their career, with 4 platinum albums just under two years. During this era, they ventured out for something extra-ordinary. All the 4 members released 4 solo albums under the name KISS, with similar album covers, with no artists contributing any to the other. This was perhaps their method of easing the tensions among the members, to showcase their own creativity; or maybe it was a very attractive market ploy. Whatever, all the albums were successful and consolidated KISS’s success further.

“Van Halen” – A prototype hard rock band, who shaped the entire hard rock and heavy metal scene in the late seventies and early eighties – and is credited with numerous hit singles and albums. Undoubtedly, most of the credit of their popularity goes to Eddie Van Halen who cofounded the band with his elder brother Alex Van Halen (Drums) in Pasadena, California in 1974, along with Michael Anthony (Bass) and vocalist David Lee Roth. The band’s numerous hit numbers have made them one of the best selling groups of all time. With sale more than 80 million worldwide, it is no surprise that they have the record of most multi-platinum albums by any American band. They have been ranked 7th on top 100 hard rock artists of all time by VH1. Although with repeatedly changing members, the group has been facing repeated controversies and uncertain future and with recent death of Eddie Van Halen, further uncertainty has loomed over the band at present.

“The Move” was an English band who was at the zenith during the late sixties. Formed by Chris Kefford, Carl Wayne, Bev Bevan, Trevor Burton and Roy Wood in 1965 in Birmingham, “The Move” were named thus as all the members had moved out from different groups at the same time. They were a band with strong pop, rock and rock ‘n’ roll basis with wonderful songs to their name, however they were more famous for their stage antics, publicity stunts and extravagant lifestyle just like their contemporary “The Who”. They even had to pay life-long royalty from their hit song “Flowers in the rain”, when they lost the lawsuit to the British Prime Minister then over the case when their manager portrayed a cartoon postcard of him with his secretary in bed during their publicity stunts. This came down heavily for the band – directly or indirectly affecting the groups’ long term direction and future. During their short lived career, they had numerous line-up changes and with finally addition of Jeff Lynne in 1970, it led their transition with 3 members into “Electric Light Orchestra” (ELO).

“Steppenwolf” is a household name in a hard core rocker’s house. Formed as a Canadian-American rock band in 1967 by John Kay (Vocals), Michael Monarch (Guitars), Rushton Moreve (Bass), Goldy McJohn (Keyboards) and Jerry Edmonton (Drums), they ruled the rock world between their heydays from 1968 to 1972. With various line up changes, they are still going strong. They are the band which created worldwide success with the song “Born to be wild.” This song was released in 1968 and used in the movie “Easy Rider” in 1969 and has always been associated with bikers and prototype counter culture. Their other notable contributions include “Magic carpet ride”, “The pusher”, “Rock me”, “Sookie sookie” etc. They had numerous hit singles but they shall always be remembered as the band which created the first heavy metal song “Born to be wild” (Not in musical style but in description).
