Reviewers- Bikash Shrestha/Nirab Kayastha

“Cheap Trick” is a band which was an excellent remix of pop, rock, heavy metal and punk. Formed in 1973 in Illinois, this American band consisted of Robin Zander (Vocals), Rick Nielsen (Guitars), Tom Petersson (Bass) and Bun E. Carlos (Drums). Their self titled debut album in 1977 did not fare that well, but the second album “In Color” the same year was more polished and successful. Their commercial worldwide break through was resulted with their 1978 live album “At Budokan.” “At Budokan” was an unexpectedly successful album, recorded during their 1978 Japan tour. It was originally released in Japan only but later due to excessively high demand, it was released worldwide and became their most successful album ever. With various ups and downs, they have been constantly making music and touring all over the world, going strong till present date.

“At Budokan” was their fourth album and first concert album. Although intended to be released in Japan only from their Japan tour, this phenomenally successful album was certified triple platinum by RIAA in 1986. It was ranked 426 on the Rolling Stones’ “500 Greatest Albums of All Time”. Undoubtedly, the album gave Cheap Trick all what a rock band could ever ask for. It stormed the charts worldwide, became their most successful album and has been a quintessential live album for a rock fan.

“I want you to want me” was originally released in Cheap Trick’s second album “In Color”. This version was also released as a single but found moderate success in US but was much more successful in Japan. This had paved the pathway for their Japan tour and the live version from “At Budokan” became their biggest selling single till date. The opening track of “At Budokan”, this song literally proves how an enthusiastic crowd can enhance the quality of a song. Undoubtedly, this version is far more superior than the original version, because of the excitement frenzy of the crowd.

The song begins with the opening introduction by Robin Zander with gleefully cheering crowd in the background. Immediately, the tempo begins with Carlos’ drums, followed by the rhythm guitar. Fine bass, upbeat drums, crowd cheering harmoniously, short but impressive guitar solos, all add the magic to the song. The song itself is relatively short and sweet, with simple pangs of a lover. One of the most important aspects of this version is the crowd. The background crowd cheering is just phenomenal. The Japanese crowd has shown amazing discipline even in a rock concert!  Slightly variant from the original version, the live version is slightly upbeat with more guitar oriented sound. The dual solo in-between the song is also equally charismatic. Overall, a simple love song, exquisitely performed by the artists as well as the crowd together, the song suddenly halts towards the end and gives another surprising beat to the listener. And in the end, the song is followed by the frenzy crowd and guitar solo fading slowly.

“Cheap Trick” have given us many memorable numbers, but when it comes to excitement, nothing beats the crowd cheering of “I want you to want me” and of course, we want all of you to want it forever..…….

Happy listening!!

I want you to want me (Live)

I want you to want me
I need you to need me
I’d love you to love me

I’m beggin’ you to beg me

I want you to want me

I need you to need me

I’d love you to love me

I’ll shine up the old brown shoes, put on a brand-new shirt
I’ll get home early from work if you say that you love me

Didn’t I, didn’t I, didn’t I see you cryin’?
Oh, didn’t I, didn’t I, didn’t I see you cryin’?
Feelin’ all alone without a friend, you know you feel like dyin’
Oh, didn’t I, didn’t I, didn’t I see you cryin’?
I want you to want me
I need you to need me
I’d love you to love me
I’m beggin’ you to beg me

I’ll shine up the old brown shoes, put on a brand-new shirt
I’ll get home early from work if you say that you love me

Didn’t I, didn’t I, didn’t I see you cryin’?
Oh, didn’t I, didn’t I, didn’t I see you cryin’?
Feelin’ all alone without a friend, you know you feel like dyin’
Oh, didn’t I, didn’t I, didn’t I see you cryin’?

Feelin’ all alone without a friend, you know you feel like dyin’
Oh, didn’t I, didn’t I, didn’t I see you cryin’?

I want you to want me
I need you to need me
I’d love you to love me
I’m beggin’ you to beg me

I want you to want me, I want you to want me

I want you to want me,

I want you to want me
