“Sir Lord Baltimore” may be not a common name in the field of seventies hard rock. Originating as a trio from Brooklyn, New York, USA in 1968, “Sir Lord Baltimore” consisted of John Garner (Drums/vocals), Louis Dambra (Guitars) and Gary Justin (Bass). They were undoubtedly America’s one of the first bona fide heavy metal band. Their music was first cited as “heavy metal” by Creem magazine in 1970 with the release of their debut album “Kingdome Come.” This was proclaimed as the first time the word “heavy metal” was used in the music. Although they were a short lived heavy metal band with only total two albums in their early career (Kingdome Come in 1970 and Sir Lord Baltimore in 1971) and one later album in 2006 as a reunion album, they never got the credit they deserved. However, their music was later rediscovered in the nineties as they became the source for most stoner rock bands of the time.

Dave Mason is a versatile guitar player with the entire career of a band member, session worker as well as a solo artist. Perhaps better known as the founding member of the band “Traffic”, formed in 1967, along with Steve Winwood, Jim Capaldi and Chris Wood. However, his tenure in Traffic had been quite erratic. He left the band immediately after their debut album Mr. Fantasy in 1967. He came back again for their next album “Traffic” in 1968 and quitted again. It would be a surprise to many that he was a good friend of Jimi Hendrix and both had listened to Bob Dylan’s “All along the watchtower” together and recreated Hendrix’s version, along with Mason’s 12 string acoustic guitar. He has provided his guitar contribution to many artists including The Rolling Stones, George Harrison, Derek and The Dominos to name a few. He had few hit singles like “We juts disagree”, “Only you know and I know”, “Will you still love me tomorrow”, “Let it go, let it flow.” For many, Dave Mason is just another shadowed seventies’ musician. However, for those, who know him, his contribution to the seventies rock is just too immense and can never be undermined.

“Shocking Blue” may be an unknown name to most rock fans. However, for ardent classic rock fans, this band is a pleasant surprise. They are one of the rare European bands which gained worldwide recognition and success in the late sixties and early seventies. They are considered one of the most successful bands to have come from Netherlands during Nederbeat movement besides Golden Earring. Formed in 1967 in Netherland by Robbie van Leeuwen (Guitars), along with Fred de Wilde (Vocals), Klaasje van der Wal (Bass) and Cor van der Beek (Drums), they had minor hits at home during the early phase. After Fred de Wilde quit to join the Dutch Army, Marsika Veres came to take the lead vocals spot. Her sexy presence and strong vocals gave the group their unique classic rock sound and subsequent string of hits. The use of Eastern instruments like Sitar and fantastic use of guitar and drums is their hallmark gaining them numerous hit numbers like “Venus”, “Send me a postcard”, “Daemon lover”, “Never marry a railroad man” etc. It would be a surprise to many that “Love buzz” by Nirvana is actually their cover version!

Jeff Beck is undoubtedly had remained, has remained and would remain a Guitar God. In his prolific guitar career spanning more than half a century, he collaborated with many well-respected artists and had been instrumental in seminal classic rock bands like “The Yardbirds.” After quitting “The Yardbirds”, he led and formed “The Jeff Beck Group” in 1967. The band had then unknown Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood on vocals and guitars respectively and had changing bass players and drummers. Soon Aynsley Dunbar became their drummer and Ron Wood switched to bass and the band became complete with Nicky Hopkins on piano.
