“Rainbow” may be not a common name to a hard rock fan, but it is a band having a significant contribution in the rock world since the late seventies. With over 28 million records sales worldwide, they have been voted no. 90 on VH1’s 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock. The band was the brainchild of “Deep Purple” guitarist Ritchie Blackmore. In 1975, Ritchie Blackmore felt alienated from Deep Purple with some musical differences and he teamed up with Ronnie James Dio’s band “Elf”, creating “Rainbow” (Also known as Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow). The band had various ups and downs with numerous line up changes and produced many albums and are still going strong. Their most notable numbers include “Since you’ve been gone”, “Jealous lover”, “Stone cold”, “Street of dreams” etc.

“Steppenwolf” is a household name in a hard core rocker’s house. Formed as a Canadian-American rock band in 1967 by John Kay (Vocals), Michael Monarch (Guitars), Rushton Moreve (Bass), Goldy McJohn (Keyboards) and Jerry Edmonton (Drums), they ruled the rock world between their heydays from 1968 to 1972. With various line up changes, they are still going strong. They are the band which created worldwide success with the song “Born to be wild.” This song was released in 1968 and used in the movie “Easy Rider” in 1969 and has always been associated with bikers and prototype counter culture. Their other notable contributions include “Magic carpet ride”, “The pusher”, “Rock me”, “Sookie sookie” etc. They had numerous hit singles but they shall always be remembered as the band which created the first heavy metal song “Born to be wild” (Not in musical style but in description).

“Derek and The Dominos” may be a surprise name for many rock enthusiasts, but it would be even more surprising to know that the band was Eric Clapton’s brain child. The band was created in 1970 out of frustration of dissolution of super-groups “Cream” and “Blind Faith” by Eric Clapton. He needed a break and approached his old friends from “Delaney & Bonnie and Friends” and together with Bobby Whitlock (Keyboards, vocals, guitar), Carl Radle (Bass, percussion) and Jim Gordon (Drums, piano), “Derek and The Dominos” surfaced. The rumor has it that the band was actually named “Eric & The Dynamos,” however, during their first concert, it was mispronounced by the announcer as “Derek and The Dominos” and Clapton stuck to it, as he wanted the band image to it, rather than his superstardom. The band has an amazing history that they produced only one album “Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs” which is considered as one of the most significant rock albums of all time. Perhaps there is no other band which reached the height of popularity of “Derek and The Dominos” with only one album!

Joni Mitchell is known as one of the greatest songwriters ever. Born Roberta Joan “Joni” Mitchell in 1943 in Canada, she is a songwriter, composer, performer as well as a painter. Her songs are rooted in folk, rock, pop and jazz and convey feelings of joy, disillusionment, and romance as well as social and environmental issues. She typified the singer/songwriter movement of the 70’s and is perhaps one of the finest and most adventurous artists of her generation. Her songs of intense emotion, soft melody, with unique open tuned guitar, lovely piano and charismatic voice are just incredible. Her songs have been covered by numerous artists numerous times. “Woodstock”, “Big yellow taxi,” “Both sides now”, “Help me”, “Chinese café”, “River” are few of her songs which are history in themselves. She has been an inspiration for all the female artists. Many extraordinarily talented artists like Bob Dylan, Graham Nash, James Taylor, David Crosby etc quote her as inspiration. Many songs have been created around her and it is rumored that Led Zeppelin’s acoustic ballad “Going to California” is devoted to her as a result of Robert Plant and Jimmy Page’s infatuation with her. In Richard Cole’s book “Stairway to heaven”, it is mentioned that Jimmy Page’s one of the fantasies had been to listen to Joni Mitchell lying on his bed and strumming her guitar and singing to him! It is no wonder that many awards were bestowed upon her in Canada and she had received Grammy Awards nine times! She was nominated 72nd Rolling Stone’s “Greatest guitarists of all time”, 42nd on Rolling Stone’s “100 greatest singers” list and ninth on their list of “100 greatest songwriters of all time”.

White Lion ruled the pop metal/glam metal scene of the late eighties and early nineties. Formed by Danish guitarist/vocalist Mike Tramp and American guitarist Vito Bratta in 1983, their classic line up also had James LoMenzo on bass guitars and  Greg D’Angelo on drums. Although they faded away quite quickly during early nineties, they are the band who would always be remembered for their innumerable hits and amazing numbers. “When the children cry” was their most successful number but their other songs like “Little fighter”, “Broken heart”, “Wait”,  “Tell me”,  “You’re all I need” etc are equally memorable.
