With more than 140 million album sales worldwide, he is considered one of the world’s best selling music artists. In 2000, he was voted “the most influential artist of all time” by his fellow music stars. Besides music, he was also a talented actor. In modern world, it is almost impossible to find any musician not influenced by him.

“Leon Russell” is an American musician and songwriter who is considered one of the most prolific writers as well as most talented artists in the music history. He had been associated with numerous artists from The Beach Boys to Joe Cocker, from Eric Clapton to Bob Dylan, from The Ventures to Ray Charles, from Frank Sinatra to The Rolling Stones and from George Harrison to Dave Mason. Elton John considered him his mentor and inspiration. And at the same time, he also had a successful solo career. His song “A song for you” has been recorded by more than 200 artists and another of his song “This masquerade” has been recorded by more than 75 artists. Basically a session artist, he has been an influential figure in all the genres of music.

“Rainbow” may be not a common name to a hard rock fan, but it is a band having a significant contribution in the rock world since the late seventies. With over 28 million records sales worldwide, they have been voted no. 90 on VH1’s 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock. The band was the brainchild of “Deep Purple” guitarist Ritchie Blackmore. In 1975, Ritchie Blackmore felt alienated from Deep Purple with some musical differences and he teamed up with Ronnie James Dio’s band “Elf”, creating “Rainbow” (Also known as Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow). The band had various ups and downs with numerous line up changes and produced many albums and are still going strong. Their most notable numbers include “Since you’ve been gone”, “Jealous lover”, “Stone cold”, “Street of dreams” etc.

“Tommy James and the Shondells” is an important American rock band from Michigan, especially active during the sixties. They are an influential rock band with their own hits along with numerous hits they gave to other bands. Formed originally as “The Echoes” with 12 years old Tommy Jackson (James) as lead singer in 1959, they finally named themselves “Tommy James and the Shondells” in 1964. Their most famous numbers include “Hanky panky”, “Crystal blue persuasion”, “Crimson and clover” (Later again a hit for “Joan Jett and the Blackhearts”), “Mony mony” (Later covered by Billy Idol), “I think we’re alone now” (Later covered by Tiffany) to name the few. Although the band could not be as big as they could have been, one important factor being that they had turned down the offering to play in the 1969 Woodstock as they did not want to take off their vacation, nevertheless, they shall always be remembered for their incredible hit numbers and the contribution they had in forming the shape of rock music in the sixties and the decades ahead.

“James Gang” is a prototype classic rock band of the late sixties from Cleveland, Ohio. This is the band which gave name and fame to Joe Walsh, later of the Eagles and an accomplished solo artist. Formed in 1966 by drummer Jimmy Fox, along with Greg Grandillo (Guitars), Ronnie Silverman (Guitars), Tom Kriss (Vocals/bass) and Phil Giallombardo (Keyboards/vocals), the band had several line-up changes before their debut album. Joe Walsh had joined them in 1968 as fifth member of James Gang. However, Giallombardo quit and the quartet remained. In 1969, during their concert as opening band for “Cream”, Silverman too let them down at the last minute and walked out. Desperate for money, they performed as a trio and subsequently, they continued as trio as they liked their power packed trio sound. This line up was changed soon with replacement of Tom Kriss with Dale Peters. This line up produced their most famous second album “James Gang Rides Again.” Later on, they had several changes and produced some more albums during the seventies. But their unique sound and fame was credited to the era of power packed trio with Joe Walsh. With hit singles like “Funk #49”, “Walk away”, James Gang does deserve honorable mention in the rock world.
