Whatever you want

Reviewers- Bikash Shrestha/Nirab Kayastha

Famous as a British boogie rock band, Status Quo was formed originally by Francis Rossi and Alan Lancaster in 1962. After various line-up changes and with the addition of Rick Parfitt in 1967, they ultimately became Status Quo in 1969. They have had numerous hits and are famous for evergreen numbers like “In the army now”, “Rockin’ all over the world”, “Pictures of matchstick men”, “Whatever you want”, “Down down” etc to name a few. Actually, they hold the Guinness Book of World Records for maximum number of UK Hit Singles (61) than any other band in history. They were also awarded Brit Awards in 1991 for their contribution to music..

“Whatever You Want” is the title song from their twelfth album of the same name, produced in 1979. The album peaked upto no. 4 in UK charts. This album is perhaps the most well known album of theirs and has numerous memorable tracks. And after decades, they are still producing albums and touring all over the world.

“Whatever You Want” is one prototype Status Quo song. It is strongly guitar driven song, with catchy lyrics and excellent composition. The song starts with slow rhythm guitar for a short moment and then the catchy riff starts slowly and builds upon with Francis Rossi and Rick Parfitt’s dual fuzzy guitar sound. Then, with the addition of Alan Lancaster’s bass and John Coghlan’s drums, the song melts into frenzy. With the riff going on, it suddenly pauses, and then the song moves ahead with the additional vocals. The lead in the middle part of the song is also pleasant to the ears, and adds beauty to the captivating riff. The lyrics is pretty straight forward, perhaps describing one’s egoistic lover. And in the end again, the song again pauses, and the vocals and riff start again. The song fades away with the same riff till the end.

Overall, Status Quo had numerous amazing hits, but as a hard core rocker looking for really amazing guitar sound, whatever you may say, “Whatever You Want” is the song you would have really wanted!!!

Happy listening!!

Whatever you want

Whatever you want
Whatever you like
Whatever you say
You pay your money
You take your choice

Whatever you need
Whatever you use
Whatever you win
Whatever you lose

You’re showing off
You’re showing out
You look for trouble
Turn around, give me a shout
I take it all
You squeeze me dry
And now today
You couldn’t even say goodbye

I could take you home
On the midnight train again
I could make an offer you can’t refuse

Whatever you want
Whatever you like
Whatever you say
You pay your money
You take your choice

Whatever you need
Whatever you use
Whatever you win
Whatever you lose

You’re showing off
You’re showing out
You look for trouble
Turn around, give me a shout
I take it all
You squeeze me dry
And now today
You couldn’t even say goodbye

I could take you home
On the midnight train again
I could make an offer you can’t refuse

Whatever you want
Whatever you like
Whatever you say
You pay your money
You take your choice

Whatever you need
Whatever you use
Whatever you win
Whatever you lose
Whatever you want

Whatever you want
