Well, Bad Company does not require any introduction to a classic rock fan. They are the staple classic rock acts. Formed in 1973 in London as the offshoots of “Free” (Paul Rodgers-vocals and Simon Kirke-drummer), “Mott The Hopple” (Mick Ralphs-guitars) and “King Crimson” (Boz Burrell-bass), the tetra pack superstars could not go wrong. And the powerful group was famously being managed by Peter Grant, then the manager of led Zeppelin. With their debut album in 1974, and subsequent albums, they got everything what a rock group would have desired for. Their first 3 consecutive albums reached top five in the album charts both in UK and US. With various line-up changes, they are active even today. No doubt, when it comes to classic rock, they are the names to be mentioned always.
Although Bad Company is almost synonymous to their two of the most famous songs-“Ready for love” and “Bad company”, they have amazing fleet of rock numbers! “Feel like makin’ love” is one of the favorite choices of many of their hard core fans. The song was taken from their second album “Straight Shooter” in 1975 and was a hit single for them. The song was actually penned by Paul Rodgers during his touring days with “Free” and was meant to be a country song. Years later, when the song was thrown to Mick Ralphs, he added on the famous guitar riff, and converted it into a heart beating rock number and the rest is, as they say, is history.
The song starts with a simple, catchy guitar plucking and rhythm, and then, along with the bass and drums, Paul Rodgers joins his charismatic vocals to add to the beauty of the song. The slow, rock composition is a simple ballad straight from the heart. The song actually portrays any teenager’s inner voice of love and lust. The main chorus, “Feel like makin’ love” is perhaps the best part of the song. The silently heavy riff by Mick Ralphs is undoubtedly the hallmark of the song. The second stanza also follows the same pattern and the solo following it also blends seamlessly with the slow, rocky beat of the entire song. The solo perhaps forces the listener to move along the slow rocky beat with a smooth melody. The zenith of the song is pronounced at the last fading stage, where the catchy guitar riff gets overlapped by Rodger’s amazing vocals and Mick’s magical lead guitar…..And you wish the song would continue the same way forever….
Yes, Bad Company is one prototype classic rock band with numerous wonderful rock songs. However, whenever you listen to their “Feel like makin’ love”, you know you can feel the love in this song forever….
