Weekend love

Golden Earring must be one of the best known rock bands to have emerged from Holland. For some rockers, they might have sounded strange, but definitely, they are one of the underrated bands of the yesteryears. Formed in 1961 as “The Golden Earrings” by Rinus Gerritsen, George Kooymans, Barry Hay and Cesar Zuiderwijk,  they were subsequently named “Golden Earring” after dropping “The” in 1967 and “s” in 1969. Despite various musicians coming and going, they have had a long career, with numerous hit singles and more than 25 albums to their name. Their most famous numbers include “Radar love”, “Twilight Zone”, “When the lady smile” to name a few. And they are going strong even today.

“Weekend love” is a wonderful rock number from their 14th album “No Promises…..No Debts” released in 1979. The album had the entire original line ups, along with addition of John Legrand on harmonica. The album was a sort of hard rock based album with approach towards AOR and slight pop touch. This song was perhaps the title song of the album, with reference “Make no promises and no debts” in the lyrics and was a major European hit as a single.

The song starts with Kooyman’s catchy, melodic, continuous plucking and Gerritsen’s humming bass. The backbone of the song is this harmonious guitar part. Then the song takes motion with the addition of drums and the riff goes smoothly along with the vocals. The song describes a teenager’s escapade of a weekend love, which was meant to be temporary. However, apparently the teen gets to understand that love is much better if permanent, and wishes for the same. Built around simple yet expressive words, the song lyrically describes the feelings of a romantic heart. After the first stanza, there is the main chorus, and after the second stanza, the main chorus returns and the first portion of the song ends. Then, the harmoniously catchy guitar plucking is repeated and the repetition of the stanzas and choruses occur. The end portion of the song has the repeat choruses and ultimately, the plucking and chorus fade away in symphony.

Overall, Golden Earring has contributed numerous noteworthy numbers for the world to savor, and no doubt, “Weekend love” is one of those forgotten gems. No matter whether it is weekend or no, go through “Weekend love” once, and you shall love the weekends as well as weekdays forever.

Happy listening!!

Weekend love

The sooner it will be the better
Gonna have to see her right away
It’s been a long time since the day I met her
I can’t handle being without her one more day

Honey get the feeling that I’m going insane
Feel so stupid using these old clichés
You better hurry up Baby, I ain’t lying
We’re down to nothing but a waste of time
Still remember everything she said
Make no promises, make no debts
All I want is your one day weekend love
She nips her wine without a flinching
(She nips her wine without a flinching)

She’s in control of it all the way

(She’s in control of it all the way)
Looks so good, pretending that she’s listening
By the time I fall asleep, she’s gone away
She’s got no mercy on a jealous heart
And she said it all right from the start
Make no promises, make no debts
But I love that lady, I got to confess

I want more than just a one day weekend love
All she wants is just my one day weekend love

I want more than just a one day weekend love
All she wants is just my one day weekend love
The sooner it will be the better
Gonna have to see her right away
It’s been a week now since she’s been around here
I can’t handle being without her one more day
Honey, get the feeling that I’m going insane
Feel so stupid using these old clichés
She’s got no mercy on a jealous heart
And she said it all right from the start
Make no promises, and make no debts
But I love that lady, I got to confess

I want more than just a one day weekend love
All she wants is just my one day weekend love

I want more than just a one day weekend love
All she wants is just my one day weekend love
