Broken heart

Reviewers- Bikash Shrestha/Nirab Kayastha

White Lion ruled the pop metal/glam metal scene of the late eighties and early nineties. Formed by Danish guitarist/vocalist Mike Tramp and American guitarist Vito Bratta in 1983, their classic line up also had James LoMenzo on bass guitars and  Greg D’Angelo on drums. Although they faded away quite quickly during early nineties, they are the band who would always be remembered for their innumerable hits and amazing numbers. “When the children cry” was their most successful number but their other songs like “Little fighter”, “Broken heart”, “Wait”,  “Tell me”,  “You’re all I need” etc are equally memorable.

They debuted in 1985 with their album “Fight To Survive” which was moderately successful. However, their second album “Pride” in 1987 took the world chart by storms. It was a double platinum album with a collection of most of their well known numbers. The follow up album “Big Game” did not live up to the expectation and subsequently 1991’s “Mane Attraction” proved to be their last official album with the original members. Mike Tramp continued later with newer members but could not be successful and finally they disbanded in 2013.

“Broken heart” is their debut single from their 1985 debut album “Fight To Survive.” However, it was again released in their 1991 album “Mane Attraction.” The 1991 version is slightly longer and of enhanced quality and was performed by their classic line up. This is one of the songs for which the band is remembered for. It is a hard rock ballad with astounding combination of intense emotion and heavy guitar work and drums. The song starts with a nice guitar plucking and LoMenzo’s cool bass. Then comes in Mike Tramp’s gifted vocals of mixture of emotion and fineness. The song describes the life after break up and the determination to carry on. After the first chorus of vocals, guitar plucking and bass, there comes in D’Angelo’s heavy drums and Vito Bratta’s thundering guitar riffs. The song then takes shape of a heavy rock ballad. Vito Bratta’s solo in between is another highlight of this song. After the repeat chorus at the end, the song slowly fades with repeat thunderous riffs and choruses. Definitely an ecstatic moment for a heavy rock ballad fan!!!!

It’s true that White Lion had a brief life during the heydays of pop/glam metal era, but their contribution to the rock world cannot be underestimated. Despite their short career with relatively fewer albums, their energetic songs keep on going strong. And yes, there is life, even after a broken heart! Keep on rocking!!!

Happy listening!!

Broken heart

Oohhoohoooo

Here I stand, all alone
Trying to fight the pain from a broken heart
Why she left me? I don’t know
It really doesn’t matter anymore
I thought that love could last forever
But here I stand lost and all alone
There is life, even after a broken heart
You can fight, the pain from a broken heart, broken heart

Start a new day, but not alone
I’m gonna break away this broken heart
I’ll meet a woman, I’m gonna take her home
Where I’ll pick up all the pieces and start all over again
I know that life will be much better,
I know the sun will shine again
Yeah baby I know, there is life even after a broken heart, broken heart
You can fight, the pain from a broken heart, broken heart
Ohho, I know that life will be much better
I know that sun will shine again
Yeah baby I know, baby I know,

There is life even after a broken heart,
There is life even after a broken heart, broken heart
You can fight the pain from a broken heart, broken heart
Ohho, there is life even after a broken heart
Oh you can fight the pain from a broken heart, broken heart
Ohho oh yeah my my baby
