“Buffalo Springfield” is undoubtedly the one and only pioneers of the folk rock, who lasted for two years only, produced three albums only but has become the source of inspiration for all the rock stars for the ensuing decades, till this date. Formed in 1966 by the veteran musicians Stephen Stills (Guitars, keyboards, vocals), Neil Young (Guitar, harmonica, piano, vocals), Richie Furay (Guitars, vocals), Dewey Martin (Drums, vocals) and Bruce Palmer (Bass) in Los Angeles, USA, this short lived American Canadian band had the most successful single “For what its’ worth”, one of the most iconic anti-war cum protest song of all times. The band had immense potential, but sadly could not last long, with all the members going to become more successful in their own ways. However, their contribution and inspiration to the future rock world can never be disregarded.

Their debut album “Buffalo Springfield” is perhaps one of the most matured debut albums by any rock band in the history. Consisting of all the veteran musicians, the album had all the ingredients to be a remarkable debut album. Although the most successful single from the album is undoubtedly “For what it’s worth”, the album had numerous priceless other gems too. Mostly penned by Young and Stills, the songs are definitely matured, soft, impressive, melodious as well as folk rock prototypes.

“Do I have to come right out and say it” is one of the most impressive ballads on the album. The master poet Neil Young has expressed his love emotions so finely in the song. The song starts with Dewey Martin’s soft drums and Bruce Palmer’s mellow bass. Immediately, Richie Furay’s soft voice comes into action. Furay’s rhythm guitars, Young and Still’s guitars, Bruce Palmer’s bass complement each other beautifully. Over this, Furay’s smoothly soft voice is definitely an icing on the top. Young’s piano during the middle guitar solo is another highlight of the song. A romantic ballad, expressed in a very matured way, the song is an epitome of Young’s poetry and piano, Fray’s singing and Still’s guitar, and overall, Buffalo Springfield’s cohesive force.

Buffalo Springfield was the pioneers of folk rock who are synonymous with the song “For what it’s worth for”. But when we dig deep into their other songs, we can find gems which might be as beautiful as “For what it’s worth”, if not more.  And once we enjoy this song, we will ask ourselves, “Do I have to come right out and say it” how good Buffalo Springfield is?

Happy listening!!!

Do I have to come right out and say it
Do I have to come right out and say it?
Tell you that you look so fine
Do I have to come right out and ask you to be mine?

If it was a game I could play it
Tryin’ to make it but I’m losin’ time
I got to bring you in, you’re overworkin’ my mind

Indecision is crowding me
I have no room to spare
And I can’t believe she’d care
Like a dream she has taken me
And now I don’t know where
And a part of me is scared
The part of me I shared
Once before

Do I have to come right out and say it?
Tell you that you look so fine (Look so fine)
Do I have to come right out and ask you to be mine?

Indecision is crowding me
I have no room to spare
And I can’t believe she’d care
Like a dream she has taken me
And now I don’t know where
And a part of me is scared
The part of me I shared
Once before

Do I have to come right out and say it, girl?
Tell you that you look so fine (Look so fine)
Do I have to come right out and ask you to be mine?

If it was a game I could play it
Tryin’ to make it but I’m losin’ time (Losin’ time)
I got to bring you in, you’re overworkin’ my mind

Do I have to come right out and say it, girl?
Tell you that you look so fine (Look so fine)
