Two out of three ain’t bad

“Meat Loaf” (Born Marvin Lee Aday) is a no stranger to the rock and metal world. With numerous hit singles and albums to his credit, Meat Loaf has always been known for his charismatically powerful wide ranging voice and vividly beautiful lyrics. With his acting career also going side by side, he is also well known for his impressive theatrical live shows. Born in 1947, the rock world just paid the last tribute to his recent death on 20 January 2022.

Ranked 96th on VH1’s “100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock”, Meat Loaf’s debut album “Bat Out of Hell” became the most successful one too. The album has been ranked 343 on Rolling Stone’s 2003 list of “500 Greatest Albums of All Time.” The album had been also included in the book “1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.” It had stayed on UK album chart for 522 weeks, only after Fleetwood Mac’s “Rumors” and Pink Floyd’s “The Dark Side of the Moon.”“Two out of three ain’t bad” is one of the most powerful slow ballad from the album. This song is perhaps Meat Loaf’s the best known ballad after “I’d do anything for love.”The song was initiated when Mimi Kennedy had suggested Jim Steinman to write a song with simple lyrics rather than complicated ones. During the conversation, the radio station was playing Elvis Presley’s song “I want you, I need you, I love you.” When this song was pointed as an example to Jim, he tried to make it twisted in a simple manner and made it into “I want you, I need you, but there ain’t no way I’m ever gonna love you, don’t be sad, ‘cause two out of three ain’t bad!”

The song begins with Roy Bittan’s fantastically charming piano, and Meat Loaf’s voice takes in. The amazingly sweet painful relationship between the partners in juxtaposition with the past ones is absolutely fantastic. Beautifully penned by Jim Steinman, the song is a perfect masterpiece of poetry and ballad. With Todd Rundgren’s guitars and backing vocals, Kasim Sulton’s bass and John “Willie” Wilcox’s drums, the song in conglomeration has turned out to be one of the best power ballads from Meat Loaf’s gallery!Yes, Meat Loaf has given us many songs to cherish, and “Two out of three ain’t bad” is undoubtedly the most incredible one!! Yes, rock fans may not want or need this song but there ain’t no way that they just can’t not love this song!!!Rest in Peace Sir! Happy listening!!! Resources- Wikipedia.org, allmusic.com

Two out of three ain’t bad

Baby, we can talk all night
But that ain’t getting us nowhere

I told you everything I possibly can
There’s nothing left inside of here
And maybe you can cry all night
But that’ll never change the way that I feel
The snow is really piling up outside
I wish you wouldn’t make me leave here

I poured it on and I poured it out
I tried to show you just how much I care
I’m tired of words and I’m too hoarse to shout
But you’ve been cold to me so long
I’m cryin’ icicles instead of tears
And all I can do is keep on tellin’ you

I want you, oh, I need you
But there ain’t no way I’m ever gonna love you
Now don’t be sad, cause two out of three ain’t bad

Now don’t be sad, cause two out of three ain’t bad

You’ll never find your gold on a sandy beach
You’ll never drill for oil on a city street
I know you’re lookin’ for a ruby in a mountain of rocks
But there ain’t no Coupe de Ville hidin’
At the bottom of a Cracker Jack box

I can’t lie, I can’t tell you that I’m somethin’ I’m not
No matter how I try, I’ll never be able
To give you somethin’, somethin’ that I just haven’t got

Well, there’s only one girl that I will ever love
And that was so many years ago
And though I know I’ll never get her out of my heart
She never loved me back, ooh I know
Well, I remember how she left me on a stormy night
Oh, she kissed me and got out of our bed
And though I pleaded and I begged her not to walk out that door
She packed her bags and turned right away
And she kept on tellin’ me, she kept on tellin’ me, she kept on tellin’ me

I want you, oh, I need you
But there ain’t no way I’m ever gonna love you
Now don’t be sad, cause two out of three ain’t bad

I want you, I need you
But there ain’t no way I’m ever gonna love you
Now don’t be sad
Cause two out of three ain’t bad
Now don’t be sad, cause two out of three ain’t bad

Baby, we can talk all night
But that ain’t getting us nowhere
