Waiting for the night
Reviewer-Bikash Shrestha
Saxon was one of the leaders of the bands representing the new wave of British Heavy Metal of the Eighties. Formed in 1977, they are one of the rare bands of those days who are still surviving, albeit with a lot of line up changes. Extensive touring and numerous albums became their hallmarks, which they have maintained even till today.
“Waiting for the night” is perhaps one of those under rated songs which does not represent the band but when you go through it, you are forced to correlate the band with it always, because once it gets stuck to you, it shall stick with you forever. Taken from their eighth studio album “Rock The Nations” in 1986, this song tries to give one of the best heavy metal sounds around that time. Saxon is much well known for their incredible numbers like “747 (Strangers in the night)”, “And the bands played on”, “Ride like the wind” (Originally by Christopher Cross), “Denim and leather”, “The eagle has landed” etc; however, for many of us, “Waiting for the night” is one number for which Saxon should be always remembered.
The song opens up with a strong guitar rhythm which is followed by an exciting main riff with a heavy rock beat. The typical hard rock voice of Biff Byford then plunges this heavy rock ballad deep into an ocean of ecstasy. The thundering beat and the exciting riff and rhythm drives the song very strongly but smoothly. The melodious lead played beautifully with twin guitars in stereo sound is another incredible part of this amazing rock song. The twin guitars lead blends so well with each other that you hardly realize that it is actually two guitars being played on. At the same time, you can’t ignore the bass which suitably provides extra beat to the song. Overall, the song typifies a hard rock sound whose theme is of a gentle ballad.
The song revolves around a typical hard life of an average citizen who is struggling the whole day and is always looking forward to be back with his love at night. The day is extremely hectic and definitely hectic enough to drive anyone crazy. The thought of the love back at home is the feeling which motivates through the day. All of us are looking forward actually waiting for the night. The song is visualized with each one of us and this is the reason why the song goes so easy with each of our ears!!!
No doubt “Waiting for the night” is a song for which Saxon may not be known for, but this song definitely is a wonderful piece of cake to all the rock savvy dudes and those who have tasted it, shall always be thankful to Saxon for this fabulous masterpiece.
Happy listening!!
