Let a woman flow

The band “It’s a Beautiful Day” may not be a common household name for a regular rock fan. However, their classical blend of jazz, blues and rock can captivate any serious rock listener. For many fans, it would be a surprise that Deep Purple’s “Child in time” was inspired by “Bombay calling” from It’s a Beautiful Day’s debut album and they had retaliated by copying Purple’s “Wring that neck” in their song “Don and Dewey” from their following album “Marrying Maiden”. No doubt, they have left an indelible mark in the seventies classic rock. They were originated in 1967 in San Francisco, California, by former orchestral player David LaFemme (vocals, violin, guitar, flute), Val Fuentes (drums), Mitchell Holman (bass) and Hal Wagenet (guitar). With numerous line up changes, the band has been continuing even today.

Band – Small Faces

Writer– Steve Marriott

Album- In Memoriam

Release year– 1969

The band “Small Faces” is considered as one of the pioneers of influential mod groups to arrive in Britain in the sixties. Formed in 1965 in London by Steve Marriott (Vocals/guitars), Kenney Jones (Drums), Ronnie Lane (Bass/guitars/vocals) and Jimmy Winston (Keyboards), Small Faces truly deserved more than they received. Later in 1966, Jimmy Winston was replaced by Ian McLagan and the band officially took shape. Although, they had a good number of hits like “Lazy Sunday”, “Itchycoo Park”, “All or nothing”, “Tin soldier” with only few early albums, they could never shade away from their mod pop image which frustrated Marriott. Undoubtedly, Steve Marriott was too talented and he could never express fully with “Small Faces” due to perhaps associations with wrong record labels and managers. He finally quit in 1968 to form “Humble Pie” with Peter Frampton. Although Small Faces continued with Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood, then “Small Faces” officially had changed into “Faces.” Despite Small Faces had short and disturbed career, they had their magnum opus with a classic psychedelic concept album “Ogdens’ Nut Gone Flake” in 1969 which most people are in awe with. Most music critics acknowledge that they were competitors to “The Who’ and rivals to “The Rolling Stones”!

Sunshine superman

Donovan is a British singer and writer, whom many people confuse with or consider as Dylan clone. However, his unique style of British folk rock projected him as the prototype psychedelic hippie generation emblem during the sixties. Although he resembled Dylan, his optimistic view and vibrant outlook of life resonated in his music which was totally in contrast to more shady, introspective, profound approach shared by Dylan. With numerous hit numbers like “Season of the witch”, Catch the wind”, “Sunshine superman”, “Mellow yellow”, “Hurdy gurdy man” to his credit, Donovan has remained a quintessential star of the flower power era and an inspiration for the generations of musicians ahead.

Two guitar lovers

Dave Mason is a versatile guitar player with the entire career of a band member, session worker as well as a solo artist. Perhaps better known as the founding member of the band “Traffic”, formed in 1967, along with Steve Winwood, Jim Capaldi and Chris Wood. However, his tenure in Traffic had been quite erratic. He left the band immediately after their debut album Mr. Fantasy in 1967. He came back again for their next album “Traffic” in 1968 and quitted again. It would be a surprise to many that he was a good friend of Jimi Hendrix and both had listened to Bob Dylan’s “All along the watchtower” together and recreated Hendrix’s version, along with Mason’s 12 string acoustic guitar. He has provided his guitar contribution to many artists including The Rolling Stones, George Harrison, Derek and The Dominos to name a few. He had few hit singles like “We juts disagree”, “Only you know and I know”, “Will you still love me tomorrow”, “Let it go, let it flow.” For many, Dave Mason is just another shadowed seventies’ musician. However, for those, who know him, his contribution to the seventies rock is just too immense and can never be undermined.
