“Starbuck” shall be absolutely an unfamiliar name to most of the rock fans, however, the prototype one hit band have their own place in the rock world. Formed in Georgia in 1974 by keyboardist Bruce Blackman and marimba player Bo Wagner, they were a pop rock/soft rock band and had few hit numbers. Although, they had only three albums, they were quite successful and they continued touring and reunited briefly in the present decade. Besides the founding members, they had numerous line- up changes. With the death of Wagner in 2017, they have practically stopped producing music.

“Moonlight feels right” is the soft rock/pop rock song from their debut album off the same name in 1975. Undoubtedly, one-hit wonder, this song shall always be remembered for the cool moonlight feel in a warm summer night. The song hit high on the charts all over the world after its release and gave the band what many albums to an ordinary band would not give in the entire career.

Written by Bruce with his own life experience of meeting his wife, this song is a romantically charming ballad. The most remarkable part of the song is the marimba solo in the middle, which may be perhaps the best known marimba solo in any pop rock song. Bruce’s cool voice and delivery and the wonderful keyboards is another highlight of the song. The guitar part is not that prominent, but the rest of the instruments have been so well arranged that the absence of guitar is hardly noticed. The fact that the song moves the listener even almost half a century after its release is the proof that the song is definitely a wonderful number.

Yes, “Starbuck” would be a strange name to many rock fans and “Moonlight feels right” may be an unfamiliar song to many, however, it is no wonder that this one hit wonder is really a wonder to any rock fan of the past, present as well as the future.Happy listening!!! Resources- Wikipedia.org, allmusic.com

Moonlight feels right

The wind blew some luck in my direction
I caught it in my hands today
I finally made a tricky French connection
You winked and gave me your ok

I’ll take you on a trip beside the ocean
And drop the top at Chesapeake Bay
Ain’t nothing like the sky to dose a potion
The moon’ll send you on your way

Moonlight feels right

Moonlight feels right

We’ll lay back and observe the constellations
And watch the moon smilin’ bright
I’ll play the radio on southern stations
Cause southern belles are hell at night

You say you came to Baltimore from Ole Miss
Class of seven four gold ring
The eastern moon looks ready for a wet kiss
To make the tide rise again

Moonlight feels right
Moonlight feels right

We’ll see the sun come up on Sunday morning
And watch it fade the moon away
I guess you know I’m giving you a warning
Cause me and moon are itching to play

I’ll take you on a trip beside the ocean
And drop the top at Chesapeake Bay
Ain’t nothin’ like the sky to dose a potion
The moon’ll send you on your way

Moonlight feels right
Moonlight feels right
