I had too much to dream (Last night)

“The Electric Prunes” might sound not so familiar name in rock music world; however, the band is a cult early psychedelic and electric rock band which could not make it as big as they could have been. However, with only two charting singles to their name, they have left quite a mark in the early psychedelic scene during the late sixties. Formed from early surf rock cum garage rock band “The Sanctions”, they comprised of James Lowe (Guitars/vocals), Mark Tulin (Bass), Ken Williams (Lead guitars) and Michael “Quint” Weakley (Drums). Known for their psychedelic classics “I had too much to dream (Last night)” and “Get me to the world on time”, they disbanded after only two albums. However, with constant member changes, the band is still alive and kicking, with Lowe being the only original member present.

Their debut album “The Electric Prunes” was a massive success in 1967, with the help of their two most successful singles. The album contained songs which were penned by the lyricists-duo Annette Tucker and Nancie Mantz. However, their memorable sound left a remarkable mark upon the psychedelic and electronic rock for the coming years.

“I had too much to dream (Last night)” is undoubtedly their signature song. Written about a blissful dream about the ex lover, this song is a gem among rock classics. With pensively beautiful fantasy lyrics, shrieking guitar fuzz tones, smoothly howling vocals, maddeningly beating drums, thundering piano and organ, the song is definitely the zenith of psychedelia.

Yes, “The Electric Prunes” have had only two hit singles, but with “I had too much to dream (Last night)”, they have proven that even a single hit single could be too much to shape the particular musical genre!!!Happy listening!!! Resources- Wikipedia.org, allmusic.com

I had too much to dream (Last night)
Last night your shadow fell upon my lonely room
I touched your golden hair and tasted your perfume
Your eyes were filled with love, the way they used to be
Your gentle hand reached out to comfort me
Then came the dawn
And you were gone
You were gone, gone, gone

I had too much to dream last night
Too much to dream
I’m not ready to face the light
I had too much to dream
Last night, last night

The room was empty as I staggered from my bed
I could not bear the image racing through my head
You were so real that I could feel your eagerness
And when you raised your lips for me to kiss
Came the dawn
And you were gone
You were gone, gone, gone

I had too much to dream last night
Too much to dream
I’m not ready to face the light
I had too much to dream
Last night, last night
I had too much to dream last night
Too much to dream
I’m not ready to face the light
I had too much to dream
Last night, last night

Oh, too much to dream
Oh, too much to dream
Too much to dream last night
Oh, too much to dream
Oh, too much to dream
Oh, too much to dream
